Nag N’ Noggin New Plymouth & Marist United Cricket Club Premiers – Expert Turf Premier T20 winners for 2025

06 Feb 2025

Congratulations to Nag N’ Noggin New Plymouth & Marist United Cricket Club Premiers – our Expert Turf Premier T20 winners for 2025.

Marist overcame their traditional rivals, Merit RV New Plymouth Old Boys’ Cricket Club in convincing fashion at Pukekura Park, winning in the end by 46-runs in front of a several hundred strong and vocal crowd.

Marist captain Daniel Bernet won the toss and opted to bat and it turned out to be a good call on a good track. Despite losing the openers early, Taranaki player Jacob Leuthard-Richards and rising young gun Chester Oldfield steadied the ship with a match winning third wicket partnership. The pair put on 115 before Oldfield departed for 46. Leuthard-Richards carried on with things though, with four booming sixes a highlight of his innings. He made 81 and along with some great late hitting by Joshua Barrett, Marist set a very competitive 164/6. Jordan Gard picked up 2/33 with the ball, while Mattie Thomas was economical, taking 1/20 off his four overs.
Needing more than 8 an over from the outset, NPOB lost a wicket early before Rupert Young (25) and Myles Simkins (23) righted the ship, but once they departed the wickets began to fall more regularly and when Mattie Thomas was run out by a superb piece of fielding by Kurt Leuthart, things were always looking tough for Old Boys. Gard (25) and Josh Borrell (21) gave a glimmer of hope but with the run rate and pressure to score mounting Old Boys eventually ended all out on 118 in the 19th over to give Marist the honours.
Ryan Watson (2/15) was a handful with the ball while Bernet was outstanding in the middle overs, taking 4/23.
The result gives Marist both white ball titles for the year, having defended them both from the previous season.
The red-ball competition awaits, but there is plenty of cricket still to be played and two other sides with a real opportunity to work their way into the three-day grand final in March.
