Fielding in Pairs
There a number of fun activities that young cricketers can play to improve the accuracy of their overarm throwing and their close catching. While wall target rebound catching activities are great for individuals the following games are designed for two or more players.

What do you need?

  • A large rubbish bin which may need to be filled with water to weigh it down [Activity 1], a gutter board [Activity 2], 1 tennis ball

How do you play?

ACTIVITY 1 : BIN BALL

  • Five or six players to stand in a circle around the rubbish bin at a distance of 3-5 metres
  • The ball is thrown at the bin to rebound at an angle to be caught or fielded
  • Points are scored for hitting the bin and/or catching the ball

ACTIVITY 2 : GUTTERBOARD
What is a gutterboard?
It is a simple wooden structure comprising two pieces of 25mm thick wood each 250mm x 600mm nailed together along the long side and reinforced with a length of 50m x 100mm timber

  • Two players to stand facing each other 3-5 metres on each side of the gutter board
  • The ball is thrown at the gutter board to rebound back to the thrower to be caught. If the thrower misses or the ball rebounds to the opposing player it is his/her turn
  • Players score points by catching the ball from their own or their opponents throw
